20TH CENTURY DOG
NUMEROLOGY

'Mad Stream' and 'Telepathy' represent a musical journey spanning a decade of writing from Cameron Undy. Both albums were recorded in October 2004. 20th Century Dog is a quintet featuring the skills of Carl Dewhurst (guitar), Simon Barker (drums), Matt Keegan (tenor saxophone) and Gerard Masters (keys). It is a vision of Undy's eclecticism and focuses as much on arrangement as it does improvisation. Numerology (Undy, Dewhurst, Barker) on the other hand is a more classic jazz scenario allowing more interplay as the title implies.
'Mad Stream' is accessible by many who would not normally venture into contemporary instrumental music. Most modern jazz records are seen as only for those in the know. Undy however has a rare gift for presenting his ideas in a very organized and surprisingly listenable setting. He draws from a diverse musical experience in jazz, rock, funk, classical, ambient, afro-beat, bossa nova, dance and world music. The quintets use of polyrhythm, groove and melody is infectious, taking the listener unsuspectingly into Undy's world.
'Telepathy' is a more abstract work allowing the players greater freedom to explore through improvisation. The trio express themselves fluidly for the most part and driving, angular playing is featured on some tracks. As the titles suggest the compositional base is experienced through number relationship (Numerology) and the playing through deep synergy of thought and feeling (Telepathy).

KIDZEN

With his debut Future Classic 12 inch Superpeople just out and receiving strong support from international tastemakers such as Kyoto Jazz Massive and Straight No Chaser this piece of vinyl finds Cameron at his best. Immersed in an epic live nu-jazz extravaganza on the A side and backed up by the more studio edged druggy broken beats of Time Out on the flip, this record gives but a taste of the quality we can expect from Kidzen in the future.
